What is Adopt a Scientist?
Adopt a Scientist is a direct-partnership funding program that connects mission-aligned donors with researchers at Good Samaritan Institute. Rather than traditional grant-making, it creates sustained collaborations where donors become partners in scientific discovery across clean water, health equity, novel materials, and climate resilience.
How do I participate as a donor?
Start by exploring our current researchers and their projects. Contact us to learn more about specific scientists and their work. We'll help you structure a partnership that aligns with your philanthropic interests—whether that's a one-time grant, annual commitment, or project-specific funding. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your contributions are tax-deductible.
What research areas does the program support?
We focus on four interconnected areas: Clean Water (purification, resource management, equitable access), Novel Materials (advanced materials for sustainability and medicine), Health Equity (addressing healthcare disparities and community health), and Climate Resilience (adaptation, mitigation, and ecosystem restoration).
How are scientists selected for the program?
We select researchers who demonstrate rigorous scientific methodology, commitment to real-world impact, and alignment with GSI's mission-driven values. Candidates must show potential for breakthrough discoveries and willingness to collaborate directly with donors. Selection is based on scientific merit, proposed research significance, and likelihood of meaningful outcomes.
What's the minimum funding commitment?
There's no fixed minimum. We work with donors to structure commitments that work for them—from $5,000 annual grants to multi-year institutional partnerships. Contact us to discuss what scale of support makes sense for your capacity and interests.
Do I have ongoing contact with the scientist I support?
Yes. Direct partnership is core to Adopt a Scientist. You'll receive regular updates on research progress, have opportunities to discuss findings, and are invited to milestone celebrations and campus events. The level of engagement is tailored to your preferences.
Can organizations become donors?
Absolutely. We welcome individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other institutions. Whether you're a private donor or representing an organization, we'll structure a partnership aligned with your giving strategy and impact goals.
How can I apply as a researcher?
If you're conducting research aligned with our focus areas and seeking partnership support, contact us with information about your project, scientific background, and research objectives. We review applications on a rolling basis and work with promising candidates through our selection process.
